ST. CHARLES – Trumpet player Andrew Egizio hasn't been able to play many live shows this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
So the 2016 St. Charles East High School grad was happy to perform several times this weekend as part of the St. Charles Jazz and Art Weekend. The event, organized by the St. Charles Business Alliance, was held Thursday through Sunday in downtown St. Charles.
"It's cool when you have something like this where you can still have everyone come out," Egizio said. "We can play and we can have people come and hear us despite the pandemic."
Throughout the event, the phase four COVID-19 guidelines outlined in the Restore Illinois plan were followed. As part of those guidelines, gatherings of more than 50 people are not allowed.
Normally, jazz is the sole focus of the event. This year's event was reformatted following the cancellation of the St. Charles Fine Art Show because of the pandemic.
The 22-year-old Egizio recently graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, wher ehe obtained a degree in jazz trumpet performance. On Sunday, Egizio was performing on a balcony patio at McNally's Pub that overlooks the First Street Plaza.
Joining him was Dylan Barnett on guitar, who also recently graduated from DePaul University.
Egizio has been performing at the event for the last several years. He was glad to be performing in front of a hometown crowd.
"It's really cool to have something in St. Charles where I grew up and playing with a lot of guys that I grew up with and playing the music that we all love," he said.
He enjoys playing the trumpet for several reasons.
"You can express lots of different emotions with it," Egizio said. "It's a very versatile instrument and can be used in all sorts of different settings."
St. Charles Business Alliance Events Manager Amy Curione said she was happy with the turnout for the event, despite bouts of rain that caused the cancellation of the drive in concert at James O. Breen Community Park that was to feature the Fox Valley Jazz Big Band.
"People definitely came out for the shows," Curione said. "There was a great response."
Curione said the St. Charles Business Alliance is trying to reschedule the Fox Valley Jazz Big Band show. On Sunday, the rain had cleared out and those who came out to the event were treated to sunny skies.
"We're just very happy to have the great weather today so people can sit outside and hear the music," Curione said.
