SUMMIT, NJ - The Christ Child Society of Summit and Bridges Outreach provided more than 360 elementary, middle and high school youth in Summit -- eligible for free or reduced lunch -- with new backpacks already filled with school supplies, thus enabling parents to take the financial resources that would have been used for school supplies to pay for food, rent and other life necessities.
This marks the 12th year of the backpacks for kids initiative.
“For many families in Summit, especially during this global pandemic, it is difficult to afford the high cost of the many school supplies needed each year," said Lois Melka, Christ Child Society of Summit Chair. "Distributing these supplies is an easy and thoughtful way for our community to help these families, and to give these children a fresh start to the new school year."
The Christ Child Society is a non-profit association of volunteers dedicated to serving at-risk children in the area. Bridges Outreach conducts street outreach and case management support, delivering food, clothing, toiletries, and other necessities to people experiencing homelessness or are at risk, in New York City, Newark, and Irvington every week and opens its doors to neighbors in need every Friday, in Summit.
Christ Child Society of Summit and Bridges Outreach expressed their profound and shared appreciation for the donations and grants from program partners the Summit Luminary Fund, the Junior League of Summit, St. Teresa’s Church as well as private donations.
