LOWER LAKE — Clear Lake scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to erase a 7-4 deficit and beat the Lower Lake Trojans 8-7 in a North Central League I varsity baseball game filled with all sorts of drama Friday afternoon in Lower Lake.

“Today was just a weird day,” Clear Lake head coach Ed Pepper said after watching the Lower Lake team unravel as the game progressed.

The Trojans (1-11 league, 1-13 overall) had a player ejected in the bottom of the third inning for “malicious contact,” according to Pepper, and that was one inning after a Lower Lake assistant coach and a Lower Lake fan began trading insults, prompting the umpires to hold up play and issue a warning in order to restore order.

“A parent and and assistant coach got into a verbal altercation,” Pepper said.

When a Lower Lake baserunner made contact with Clear Lake first baseman Jonathon Werner in the bottom of the third, the Lower Lake player was ejected. He then left the field with two of his Lower Lake teammates and an assistant coach in tow, leaving the Trojans with only eight players the rest of the game, according to Pepper.

“Lower Lake did not quit, they came at us with eight guys,” Pepper said.

Lower Lake used only two outfielders in the final innings although the Cardinals (6-6 league, 7-11 overall) couldn’t take advantage.

“We kept hitting the ball right to the outfielders in the gaps,” he said.

Every team the missing-man spot was due up in the Lower Lake batting order, it was an automatic out. In fact, the final out of the game was the automatic out, according to Pepper.

Intermixed with all the weirdness was a solid effort in relief by winning pitcher Maddox Albaum, who allowed no runs and just one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings while striking out one and walking two.

Lower Lake led 5-1 after two innings. Clear Lake closed the gap to 5-4 with a three-run third inning, but the Trojans got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.

Drake Smart went 2-for-3 with a double and Matthew Martin went 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Cardinals. Hank Ollenberger added two more hits and Ethan Maize went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Clear Lake is home Tuesday to face Cloverdale (7-5) at 4 p.m. Lower Lake travels to Willits (0-12).
