JACKSON, MI – The grass is growing, the dandelions are blooming and the city of Jackson is reminding its residents to keep their lawns mowed.
City contractors cut the grass and removed weeds at 490 properties in 2020, resulting in $126,591 in fines sent out to residents, city officials said, adding they’d like to see a decrease in fines this year.
Jackson’s lawn mowing ordinance requires residents to keep their lawns and noxious weeds below 8 inches in height on average. If a violation is reported, the city will measure the lawn and then contract to have the lawn cut.
The average fine is $156, but it can vary depending on how much must be removed, officials said.
Most grass complaints are submitted to the city by neighbors, who worry about the look of properties or an intersection’s safety, officials said.
“We know residents have a lot going on right now and grass cutting can be forgotten, but we ask them to think of their neighbors and how tall grass can impact their property, neighbors and the overall look of our community,” Shane LaPorte, Neighborhood and Economic Operations department director, said in a statement. “It’s also a good idea get someone to mow your grass if you’re away on vacation for a long period so you don’t return to a fine.”
City officials will warn anyone of a violation through mail and give them 10 days to remedy the lawn before contractors come, according to the city’s lawn ordinance. Residents then have 30 days to pay the fine.
