SPOKANE, Wash. — A day of shopping turned into getting vaccinated for a few people because the Spring Market at the Pavilion hosted a pop-up vaccination clinic on Wednesday.

20 people walked up, filled out a form and got a shot in less than 30 minutes. Safeway got the call on Tuesday from the mayor’s office asking them to be a part of the clinic. Though it was last minute, non-vaccinated people took advantage of it.

“Just came to see and support all the local vendors,” said Rachel Gilmore, a Spokane mother.

A stroll at the market with her 12-year-old son brought an unexpected decision after she talked to some people at the pop-up clinic.

“It kind of put a thought in my head,” Gilmore said. “I had been contemplating it for weeks and weeks and I just didn’t know what to think about it.”

She decided to go for it, after getting some thoughts from her son, who just became eligible for the Pfizer vaccine.

“I just asked him just now about what he thought and he was really strong about it,” she said. “I [her son] don’t see a problem with it. I think we should get it.”

Gilmore got the one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“I love it. I was like if I had to get a second one, I worry that I wouldn’t follow through with the second shot on time,” Gilmore said.

Her shot happened while getting a front-row view of the Spring Market.

“I think maybe doing it outside will give people a little bit more relaxed feeling,” said Jason Talley, a pharmacist at Safeway. “They’re in their environment instead of in ours.”

Talley, people from Albertsons, the National Guard and Medical Reserve Corps came over from the Spokane Arena to help get the clinic up and running.

It is something Gilmore is grateful for and said she feels safer after making Wednesday night’s choice.

“We all do want to stop the pandemic and the older people from dying and the less fortunate,” she explained. “Now that summer’s coming and farmers markets are here, I want to partake in more of that.”

If you missed out, there is another clinic on Friday at the Numerica Skate Ribbon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can grab happy hour food, drinks, and even roller skate or ride on a scooter for free if you get vaccinated.
