All-American classics took center stage during Ellie Monahan and Mark Dobrosky's wedding weekend earlier this month. First, the four-day celebrations were held over Fourth of July weekend. (While the Los Angeles-based couple—she is a TV writer who most recently wrote and produced on Amazon's Emmy-nominated series The Boys; he works at Imperial Capital—had originally planned on getting married on July 4, 2020, they were luckily able to postpone the wedding by a year and welcome more than 200 fully vaccinated guests.)
Second, the venue—Cedar Lakes Estate in Port Jervis, New York—used to be an Olympic training camp for gymnasts and women's soccer players, and then it was a summer camp, meaning it created a perfect setting to host a Field Day full of classic games like water ballon tosses, tug-of-war, and three-legged races. "It was a great icebreaker since we mixed up the teams among age ranges and friend groups," Ellie says. Then there was the rest of the itinerary, which included a screening of Dirty Dancing and an '80s-themed costume party (the bride dressed as Madonna in Like a Virgin, naturally. Her mother, the legendary journalist Katie Couric, came as Cyndi Lauper) with barbecue, fried chicken, and plenty of decade-appropriate Skittles, Pop Rocks, and Razzles to keep spirits high.
As for the big day itself, the couple opted for a Christian marriage service. "I got chills hearing 'Dearly beloved' and saying all the vows you've heard a hundred times at weddings and in movies," Ellie says. "It felt like we were a part of a tradition much older and bigger than ourselves."
See below for all the details of Ellie and Mark's July 4th wedding in the Hudson Valley.
The Proposal
"Mark and I have been together for over eleven years now," says Ellie, who was first set up with her now-husband while the two were undergrads at Yale. In February 2019, Mark proposed during a weekend trip to Ojai, California. The original plan was to pop the question on the golf course of the Ojai Valley Inn, specifically at a hole known as "The Pink Moment," named for its rose-tinted sunset view. "Much to Mark’s chagrin, it was a pretty overcast evening," Ellie says. "Cold and slightly annoyed, I started walking up to the restaurant when Mark called out for me and I turned around to find him down on one knee, holding the ring box upside down. It was perfect."
The Invitations
The Venue
Ellie fell in love with Cedar Lakes Estate when she attended another wedding there back in 2016. "It was incredible—the food, the activities, staying together on site in bunks," she says. "I also grew up going to summer camp and since it used to be a camp I thought it was the perfect setting for our wedding."
The Field Day
For the first group activity of the weekend, guests were divided into color-coded teams for Field Day. Pictured here is the mother of the bride's team. As Katie wrote on her website: "I was yellow, and was accused of stacking the teams because we had a lot of very talented athletes on our team."
The Welcome Party
An all-out '80s-themed costume bash followed that evening, an idea inspired by the fact that Ellie and Mark's good friend Cherie Neve is the lead singer of the '80s cover band Rubix Kube. "I always knew I’d love to have them perform at our wedding in some capacity," Ellie says. "So we thought why not lean into the theme!"
The Costumes
Ellie dressed as Madonna in "Like a Virgin" and Mark was the Talking Heads' David Byrne. Her sister Carrie was an '80s prom girl, while mom Katie came as Cyndi Lauper.
The Dress
It took six months and visits to eight different bridal salons for Ellie to find the perfect dress: this Monique Lhuillier gown with a lace bodice, an organza skirt with silk-screened flowers, and a dramatic train. "I ended up adopting the mantra 'go big or go home,'" Ellie says. "You only get married once, right?"
The Suit
Mark wore a blue summer suit by Ermenegildo Zegna.
The Bride's Entrance
Ellie found ways to honor her late father Jay Monahan, who died of colon cancer in 1998. Her "something borrowed" was a pearl bracelet he had gifted Katie many years ago. And her walk down the aisle was accompanied by her dad's favorite song, "Ashokan Farewell.”
The Mother of the Bride
"My mom kept me calm and smiling all weekend," Ellie says of Katie, who wore custom Marchesa.
The Newlyweds
Ellie and Mark didn't shy away from traditional wedding conventions. During the ceremony, Ellie's sister (and maid of honor) Carrie sang "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac.
The Reception
After a cocktail hour of cheese, charcuterie, sushi, and mini lobster rolls, guests enjoyed a family-style dinner of roast chicken, halibut, broccolini, and mashed potatoes (the flower arrangements for the weekend came courtesy of Ingrid Carozzi of Tin Can Studios). The couple's specialty cocktails included spicy margaritas and vodka sodas infused with blackberries. As for the cake: it was a three-tier vanilla on vanilla buttercream concoction filled with raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.
The First Dance
The newlyweds did their first dance to Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
The Afterparty
For the late-night revelry (fueled by pizza and face-painting), Ellie changed into a sequined Versace minidress. After the wedding, the couple went on a mini-moon to Portland and Chebeague Island, Maine. This fall, they're planning a bigger trip to Tuscany.
