The Oregon State Beavers like athletic inside linebackers who can do-it-all - be physical against the run, pressure the quarterback, drop back into coverage and close on a running back in the flat.
On Thursday, Oregon State got a commitment from Bonneville High School (Utah) athlete Kord Shaw, who certainly fits that mold:
As a junior, Shaw led his team in tackles. And receiving yards. And return yards.
He also ran for 158 yards averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and even threw four passes.
“Throughout my high school career, I’ve played all over – receiver, slot,” Shaw said. “Last year was my first year playing linebacker, and that felt pretty comfortable to me. Ever since then, I’ve been looked at as a linebacker even though my highlights are mostly at receiver. When I met with Oregon State and coach Trent Bray, he showed me what I’d be doing and it felt right. That’s why I made the choice.”
Although linebacker is the 6-foot-3, 205-pound athlete’s newest position, it’s the one he’s most suited for at the collegiate level.
Oregon State made sure to highlight that fact during his unofficial visit in June, as Bray, the linebacker coach, sat Shaw down and showed him his own highlights on both offense and defense followed by an Oregon State clip indicating how its scheme mirrors his athletic instincts.
“I think it’ll come pretty natural to me,” Shaw said. “I’ve moved all over the field and I’ve been able to do pretty well. I think that’s why Oregon State is interested in me. They brought me into coach Bray’s room and showed me film of one of their current . ‘This is why we think you can do this.’ Sometimes it was even an offensive highlights – hitting the hole – whether I’m doing that in high school as a running back or playing linebacker.”
The one aspect of football that hasn’t come naturally to Shaw is the recruiting process.
He largely avoided social media and elected not to attend camps that weren’t padded, which might be a key reason his only other offer was Weber State despite interest elsewhere.
“I honestly didn’t understand the whole recruiting process and how it all worked,” Shaw said. “It’s big into camps and I only went to one camp because my coach told me I needed to start going. I’m thrilled to be going to Oregon State. When I visited there, it was pitch perfect. I loved the coaches, the facilities… there wasn’t one bad thing about it.”
Oregon State has 12 commitments in the 2022 recruiting class, a group that ranks No. 52 nationally and No. 7 in the Pac-12 Conference.
