Rochester Community Schools is seeking to fill a vacant position on its school board following the resignation of former Trustee Andrea Walker-Leidy.
Walker-Leidy was originally appointed in April 2018 and reelected to a six-year term.
Candidates must submit an application and resume to Kristin Bull, board president, by noon Tuesday, Aug. 10. Postmark dates will not be considered.
A special meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 501 West University Drive in Rochester to meet candidates, conduct interviews and select a trustee. The meeting is set to start at 6:30 p.m and may be changed depending upon the number of applicants.
To be eligible, candidates must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days, a resident of the Rochester Community Schools district; and a registered voter in the district.
The school board will follow the Revised School Code and Michigan Election Law in appointing an eligible candidate to fill the position, with the term beginning immediately and concluding on Dec. 31, 2022.
Any candidate convicted of a felony involving dishonesty, deceit, fraud, or a breach of the public trust related to an elective office or position of government employment is disqualified.
General duties and responsibilities of board members include: coordinating initiatives with Dr. Robert Shaner, the district superintendent; establishing district policy on the advice of legal counsel; adopting the budget and aligning funding priorities with district goals; determining school facility needs; and responding to community input.
Commitments include preparing for and attending board meetings and closed sessions; participating in an average of approximately six meetings or activities annually; participating in district liaison assignments once per month on average, such as seats on committees within the greater Rochester area or Oakland Schools organization; and joining in commemoration ceremonies like commencements and honors events.
Other duties may include two additional meetings or activities per month.
“The Board of Education is comprised entirely of volunteers,” Shaner said. “The Rochester Community School District is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of public servants on our board who continue to uphold the belief that all children have the right to a safe, quality education.”
