The Ohio Bombers were crowned champions of the 47th annual First Ward Falcon Club Men’s Fast Pitch Softball Tournament on Sunday afternoon — though the final result came a bit earlier than expected.
The rain began to fall ever so slightly in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bombers came to bat, locked in a scoreless tie with Can-Am Ridge. Fortunately for the Bombers, their offense woke up at just the right time, as they scored three runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. That score held as the final of the rain-shortened championship game to give the Bombers the championship in their first trip to Prommenschenkel Stadium.
“It was a good weekend. We had some battles — we lost a close game yesterday — and this was a nice comeback,” said Bombers shortstop/manager Delmar Martin. “Obviously, the rain shortened it a little bit, but it was a nice weekend. It was nice winning.”
Jonas Hajny was dominant for the Bombers in the pitcher’s circle. He faced only two batters over the minimum through four innings, which kept the Bombers in the game until their offense got going.
Can-Am Ridge pitcher Tom Berube was equally as impressive through the first three innings until the Bombers pounced in the fourth.
A hit batter followed by a bloop single to short-center field put the first two men on base to start the inning. Then, cleanup hitter Dani Aranaz ripped a double past a diving third baseman to bring both runners around to score. The Bombers tacked on another run as Aranaz scored on a fielder’s choice to finish the scoring.
As the fourth inning came to a close, the skies opened up and a torrential downpour commenced. Can-Am managed to load the bases in the top of the fifth, as Hajny struggled with his command in the rain. He frequently called Martin to the circle to borrow a cloth to wipe off the ball, as many spectators ran for cover wherever they could find it.
Hajny left the bases loaded after a hard line drive to third base was snared and the umpires called the game after reaching the required duration for a valid result.
“It’s our first year here so I didn’t know what to expect, but it was good competition,” said Martin. “Thank you to (Tim Wdowiasz) for having the tournament. He’s a good guy and it’s a great tournament.”
While Can-Am was denied a chance to mount a comeback, three runs looked to be plenty with the way Hajny was throwing before the rain, coupled with the struggles from Can-Am Ridge at the plate.
“The majority of our guys, we’re an over-50 team. We didn’t hit the ball well all tournament. We knew going against a thrower like that, it was not going to be easy,” said Can-Am Ridge manager Dan Duemo, who opened the tournament with a victory in the pitcher’s circle against the Dunkirk Monnies.
Despite the loss, Duemo said, “We’re happy with how we did.”
He credited the newcomers with the victory of the tournament that his Can-Am Ridge team is so accustomed to coming to Dunkirk for on a regular basis.
“We absolutely love it. Some of us have been coming here since the early-to-mid 90s and (Wdowiasz) does such a good job and so much work,” said Duemo. “We always have a great time when we come. It’s a good tournament, the teams are good, it’s always competitive. It’s a lot of fun. We always love coming here.”
