Hit by supply chain shortages, one more time.
Britney Spears has reportedly finished writing what promises to be a bombshell of a celebrity memoir — but its publication date will apparently be delayed due to a lack of paper, according to TMZ.
Back in February, Page Six exclusively broke the news that the Princess of Pop had signed a $15 million book deal with Simon & Schuster, which nabbed the contract following what was said to be a months-long bidding war amongst publishing houses for the rights to Spears’ autobiography.
But now that the “Dear Diary” singer, 40, has at last been able to get it all down in writing, her life’s story won’t reach the eyes of the public for some time thanks to nationwide manufacturing upheavals that have resulted in a massive “paper crunch” in the book publishing industry, per Publishers Weekly.
“I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I’ve never seen a market like this before,” said Midland Paper Vice President Bill Rojack at a PW-hosted webinar earlier this year. He went on to explain that, although demand from publishing houses for book-quality paper has been on the rise, elsewhere it has fallen by 50% in “recent years.” In response, industrial paper mills have pivoted to cater to stronger markets such as corrugated cardboard and other packaging material.
“This is more than a market cycle,” Rojack continued. “It is a structural transformational sea change that happened so much faster than anybody expected because of Covid.”
It’s worth noting that this shift evidently didn’t deter Simon & Schuster from distributing “The Official Britney Spears Coloring Book,” which was released by indie publisher Ulysses Press in November 2021.
The resurgence of interest in all-things-Spears came about as the broader public — especially millennials who counted themselves among her avid fanbase in the aughts — became aware that her professional decisions and finances had been at the behest of her formally estranged father since he legally imposed a conservatorship over the “Toxic” singer in 2008.
The subsequent backlash at the reality of Spears’ situation likely contributed to a judge ending the conservatorship last November.
