Are you exhausted from the flood of summer festivals and fairs yet? No? Great, because we have another strong list of outdoor festivals and other amusements to keep you going this weekend. Portland’s cornerstone free jazz festival is set to kick off at Cathedral Park, and the town of Sherwood is welcoming guests back for the Robin Hood Festival. We’ve also got a Tony Award-winning play opening this week and pair of comedy shows to choose from.
Although the state-wide indoor COVID-19 mask mandate has lifted, some venues or artists still have restrictions in place. Check website venue information for specific COVID safety requirements.
42nd Annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival
Portland’s biggest free jazz party is gearing up for a weekend of smooth tunes under the historic St. Johns Bridge. Listen to hours of performances by area jazz, blues, and soul musicians as well as Latin artists. The Jazz Society of Oregon puts together this annual event, now in its 42nd year. Performers include Eddie Martinez, Tony Coleman (in a tribute to BB King and others), Pura Vida Orquestra, and Greaterkind.
4:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, 1-9 p.m. Saturday, 1-8 p.m. Sunday, July 15-17, Cathedral Park, 8706 N. Bradford St.; free admission but donations suggested; jazzoregon.org/2022-festival-live

Tim Heidecker
The American comic and actor offers two shows (early show is sold out) at the Aladdin this week that includes both funny stuff and music with his band The Very Good Band. He’s got jokes, but he also does a lot of improv and has been called a “failure-centric” comedian by Vice. Need to laugh? This could be the ticket.
Late show 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 15, Aladdin Theater, 3017 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.; tickets $49.50; event.etix.com
Milwaukie Porchfest
Porchfest is back, when musicians, actors, and entertainers spread out across the Milwaukie area and sing, dance, bagpipe, juggle or whatever. Will they perform on a street near you? Check out the schedule.
6:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays, July 15, 22 and 29 in various locations in Milwaukie; free; milwaukieporchfest.com
La Strada dei Pastelli
A chalk art festival takes over the streets of downtown Hillsboro in a colorful salute to the Italian art form. Watch as nationally-recognized and emerging visual artists create new large-scale works on the ground beneath your feet. Most works average 10X10 feet and will remain on view through the weekend. The event also includes performance art, music, and more on the main stage, as well as food and beverage vendors.
10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, July 16-17, downtown Hillsboro along E. Main Street from First to Fourth avenues, free; tvcreates.org/lastrada/
Art on the Beach/Lincoln City
The summer event brings together community science and artistic expression to help educate the public about climate change and its impacts on the Cascade Head Biosphere, a UNESCO-designated marine reserve. Cascade Head founders, as well as Chinook Winds Casino, the Elakha Alliance, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon State University and visiting guest artist Josie Iselin, have come together this year to highlight kelp forests and the role they play in marine ecosystems. Free events include:
- Sea star monitoring & tabling
- Sand raking kelp designs
- “Forests of the Sea and the Sea Otters that Call Them Home” art and science talk
Events are held various times Saturday-Monday, July 16-18, in various venues in the Lincoln City area, and, of course, on the beach. Visit the website for a complete schedule and information on how to register: cascadehead.org/events
Portland Cello Project
When you think of cello music you may think of Brahms, Dvorak or Haydn. But this Sunday, the Portland Cello Group, 9-member strong nationally-recognized and touring troupe, will present “Elliot Smith Meets Prince & Radiohead.” Bring a blanket or low lawn chair and enjoy live pop and indie music like you may have never heard it before, under the canopy of the farm’s massive 500-year-old oak tree. Food and drinks available for purchase.
6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, Topaz Farm, 17100 N.W. Sauvie Island Road; $30 all ages; www.etix.com/ticket
Forest Grove Concours D’Elegance
Coming up on its 40th year, this annual classic car show features more than 300 antique, collector, and special interest automobiles loved by their owners, and admired by car fans across the region. Judges will assess the vehicles based on quality and authenticity of restoration. You get to judge them just on what you think looks the coolest. Live music by Michael Allen Harrison.
8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, July 17, Pacific University campus, 2043 College Way, Forest Grove; admission $8-$20; forestgroveconcours.org/attend/schedule
“Hadestown”
This 2019 musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, and also won six Outer Critics Circle awards. The concept for the play came from a good folk and jazz album, which was workshopped into a great sung-through Broadway musical. Populated with gods, nymphs and three nosy Fates, the musical sets the tale of the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice into a vaguely Prohibition-era setting on Earth. (Think Mardi Gras-meets-ancient Greece.) Not up on your Greek mythology? Well, then just go for the hell of it.
Opens 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19 and continues various dates and times through July 24, Keller Auditorium, 222 S.W. Clay St.; tickets start at $25, some shows are sold out; portland.broadway.com
