D5-6 preview: Brown can do it all for St. Mary’s - Boston Herald

LYNN – St. Mary’s head coach Sean Driscoll has coached a bushel full of talented players during his time as an assistant and head coach at Winthrop and now during his time on Tremont Street in charge of the Spartans.

During all that time, however, Driscoll admits he might not have had a better all-around athlete than senior running back/defensive back David Brown Jr.

The senior comes into this season as arguably one of the best multi-threat athletes in the state. Having someone like Brown on his side is something Driscoll can’t help but smile about.

“The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree,” Driscoll said about Brown and his talented family. “But the thing about David is the fact that he puts in the work. I’ve known him since he was little when his dad (David Brown Sr.) was coaching in Winthrop. Even back then, he was out there working things.”

For the younger Brown, finding his niche on the gridiron was something that didn’t come naturally as basketball was always his primary focus growing up. That prowess helped lead the Spartans to a state title this past winter.

But once Brown got a chance to play during his sophomore season, the light went on. It resulted in a junior campaign that saw him rush for nearly 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns with another 250 yards receiving and four more touchdowns.

“I had always played growing up,” Brown said. “And I had always loved football. But after last season, I have to say that I’ve really taking a liking to it.”

Last season ended for the Spartans in the state semifinals with a loss to Abington and it was right after that game on the bus ride back from Quincy where Brown and his returning teammates realized that they might have a chance to get one step further this season.

“We have everything here on this team to get where we want to go,” Brown said.

One difference for the Spartans this season will come on their schedule. After losing their opponent for the opening game of the season, St. Mary’s had to look about 500 yards from its front door to find a
replacement: KIPP Academy.

“It worked out really well for us. We had lost our first game and they had also so it just seemed like a natural fit with two teams from Lynn,” Driscoll said. “Hopefully, it’s the start of something that we can do every year.”

Other than the rare chance for two Lynn teams to play during the season, it also provides a chance for Brown and KIPP’s Juan Setalsingh, another two-way standout, to flash their talents for all to see.

“I played with Juan in Pop Warner growing up,” Brown said. “It’s week one. A city game and we’re playing against a team that has become very good in the last five or six years.”

Driscoll also knows the new opener for the Spartans isn’t going to be a walk in the park.

“KIPP has become a great program in a real short time. They have a great quarterback in Juan and a lot of great athletes. It’s not going to be an easy game for us. That’s for sure,” Driscoll said.
