An urn and ashes were found in a parking lot by an employee at the H-E-B on Pleasanton Road and Southwest Military Drive on Monday, September 26, the San Antonio Express-News reports. The urn is reportedly believed to have been left behind by a customer.
Police said the cremated remains were found around 6:40 p.m. and eventually took custody of the urn to store it in the department's property room.
The Express-News spoke with Priscilla Mendoza, a women who witnessed the exchange between police and H-E-B employees, who said she found it troubling. Mendoza said that she originally believed the remains were pet's ashes, but was now convinced the urn contained human remains.
“I’m not sure if somebody lost it, or maybe somebody stole something and then they just left it there,” Mendoza told the Express-News. “It’s kind of weird. That’s not an everyday occurrence.”
H-E-B has been making headlines lately. The San Antonio-based grocery chain recently opened its first store in Frisco to much fanfare, which includes the sale of more than 1,000 lbs. of brisket at the in-store BBQ joint True Texas BBQ. It was announced earlier this summer that Forth Worth and the Tarrant County area will also be getting their first store, which is set to open in Mansfield.
H-E-B announced earlier this month the launch of a new debit card service that will offer 5% cash back on brand purchases.
