NORTHRIDGE, CA — "This is what it looks like when a community comes together," wrote Tina Giardina Gilmore, a teacher from Napa Street Dual Language Elementary School in Northridge who organized a drive to help the families displaced by Saturday's apartment building fire.

The blaze, caused when illegal fireworks hit a palm tree, burned down an entire apartment building and left eight families without homes.

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the parent center of Napa Street Elementary School, at 19010 Napa St. in Northridge, opened from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept donations for the displaced residents. Gilmore asked for clothes, money, and food for 10 adults, (five males and five females), and 10 children (six boys ages 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, and 15, and four girls ages 2, 9, and 10).

By Wednesday morning, Gilmore reported that the massive influx of donations have filled up the school's parent center and auditorium, and that donations are now being accepted at Devonshire PALS Center at Wilbur Avenue and Parthenia Drive in Northridge.

Gilmore said that parents have been asking pillows, blankets, and food and hygiene products. Some tried to donate furniture, but the families have nowhere to put it right now.

On Thursday, she will sort through the mass of donations and organize them to donate to the affected families.

"I have spoken to many of the parents and they can't believe it," Gilmore wrote on Facebook. "One mom just said, 'God bless you, all of you."

Valley residents have been finding other ways to help the families as well. 23 donors have raised $1,511 on a GoFundMe page for the victims, though the goal is $10,000. On Friday, Councilman John Lee, the LAPD Devonshire PALS program, Napa Street Elementary, and the Red Cross will meet with the eight affected families to ascertain their needs, according to a Lee spokesperson.

Lee will provide $300 gift cards to each family, which was made possible by a donation from the Change Reaction. Lee's office said that he is also coordinating with different philanthropic partners to establish a fund for the families.
