LOWELL — Do-It-Yourself Lowell, a local group that works to help those seeking to take on projects to better the city, has selected a new program director to lead the group as it seeks to raise money to fund projects and to raise awareness of the importance of community.
Alexis Ploss will work part-time as the group’s program director, managing all aspects of the group’s activities, which include hosting workshops for young people and helping volunteers with community projects, according to a press release.
Ploss also works for Community Teamwork Inc.’s Division of Child and Family Services, a mission she will continue to pursue since her position at DIY Lowell is part part time.
“With an academic career focusing on education and extensive professional experience in activism, organizing and human services, Alexis will bring her immense passion and a fresh perspective to DIY Lowell,” the group said in a press release.
One of Ploss’ first projects will be leading DIY Lowell’s new fundraising initiative, Give Us Five, which seeks to both raise $2,000 and to use social media to ask contributors what the group describes as a key question: Why is building community important during this time?”
The fundraiser will seek donations of $5 or more, with donors encouraged to also post a selfie or short video on social media explaining why they gave to DIY-Lowell and why community-building is so important.
Ploss expressed excitement about her new role and the opportunities it will present.
“I am beyond thrilled to have been provided the opportunity to work with DIY Lowell and empower fellow members of our community to enact lasting change,” Ploss said. “I came to Lowell six years ago and fell in love with this city, from the richness in culture to the ever-expanding diversity. It will be a top priority for me to work toward increasing the capacity of DIY Lowell with special focus on ensuring that currently underrepresented segments of our community are uplifted and heard.”
Suzzanne Cromwell, co-chair of DIY Lowell’s advisory committee, said Ploss was impressive and enthusiastic in her interview, and expressed a clear understanding of what the organization wants to accomplish in the community.
“The Program Director is a dynamic role, and Alexis will use her connections with the community to strengthen partnerships among DIY Lowell, other civic organizations, and community members,” Cromwell said in a press release.
