Multiple state beaches on Long Island were closed Sunday after they quickly reached capacity as temperatures soared.

The affected beaches included Field 2, 6 and the Westhouse Bath Pool at Jones Beach, Robert Moses State Park, Orient Beach State Park, Sunken Meadow State Park and Gilgo Beach.

Nassau has extended pool hours and opened cooling centers as the hot weather is making people find ways to beat the heat. The Syosset-Woodbury pool was also close to reaching its limit, which is about half of the amount usually because of social distancing guidelines.

The Oyster Bay Town Clerk tells News 12 that the pool was almost at full capacity, which is 400 people, but pool hours are extended to 8 p.m.

He says all the town's pools and beaches are currently open.

The Wantagh and Cantiague Park pools are open Sunday through Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Cooling centers open through Wednesday include Cantiague Park's Administration Office in Hicksville, the Wantagh Administration Building in Wantagh and the Mitchel Field Administration Building in Uniondale.

Doctors say it's important to take a minute for yourself to step away from the crowd, take your mask off and take a sip of water to keep hydrated.

Dr. Frederick Davis, with Northwell Health, says you might get overheated faster than usual while wearing a mask and to also check in on family.
