The event, which is this Saturday in Medora, helps raise money for the Bismarck-based charity Brave the Shave, which supports families in North Dakota who have children with cancer and helps fund pediatric cancer research.

"It's a kids' event, but it's the real deal," said Taner Ohlsen, family representative and board member. "It's very challenging, but I tell everybody that asks me, 'Everybody can do it. You can walk through it and go around some of the obstacles ... Everybody can do the course, but if you're doing it competitively and you're really one of those uber-athletes, it's not easy."

New this year, there will be a kids' obstacle course as well as the regular five-mile obstacle course which begins and ends at the Medora Rodeo Grounds.

There are competitive divisions from 8 to 9 a.m. and non-competitive divisions from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants can register online or on the day of, in person. For adults 19+, the fee to compete is $70. For youth ages 13-18, the fee to compete is $30. Adults wanting to complete the course without competing can pay $55 to do so; for youth the cost is $25. Kids 12 and under can participate for free.

In the competitive division, a $100 cash prize will be awarded to the fastest adult male, adult female, youth male and youth female to complete the course.

There are 16 obstacles in the regular course, and each one comes with its own penalty for failing to complete it as well as the picture and story of a child in North Dakota who fought cancer.

"We tell the runners that this is meant to be their inspiration ... If Dash can do that obstacle, you can do this one," Ohlsen said.

Obstacles include the Grasp of Gratitude, which is apex steel monkey bars, and the Wall of Angels.

"We'll have all of our Brave the Shave kiddos who have passed away (on the Wall of Angels). It's dedicated to them," Ohlsen said.

Brave the Shave families are invited to all of their events, and this year, three kids who are no longer immunocompromised will be at the event, as well as the family of a child who passed away from cancer.

"They're there so that people can see their story, see that this is real, and see that this is not as rare as you'd think," Ohlsen said. "There's kids all over North Dakota that are fighting this or have fought this in recent years ... Right now, we have roughly 127 families that we are in contact with that have kids that are either going through it right now or have in the recent past, and that's just the ones we know of."

Extra safety precautions will be in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're going to be screening people as they come in," Ohlsen said. "There will be a little station where we take temperatures and go through symptoms. We will obviously be encouraging people to social distance. Each obstacle is going to have a big sprayer of disinfectant and will be sprayed down between the groups that go through."

Despite the pandemic, they're expecting a bigger turnout than last year.

"Last year, it was like 52 degrees and raining. We were so prepared for like 110 ... We had a lot of hope for day-of registrants that didn't come because of the weather last year. This year, it looks like we're going to be trending and hoping to see 150 participants," Ohlsen said.
