The all-state squad, announced by the South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Wednesday, features three players averaging more than 20 points per game on the first-team.
First-team members include Winner’s Bella Swedlund, Sioux Falls Christian’s Lexi Unruh, Dakota Valley’s Rylee Rosenquist, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Emilee Fox, McCook Central/Montrose’s Madisen Koepsell and St. Thomas More’s Haleigh Timmer, who was named the Class A player of the year.

Swedlund, received her second first-team all-state selection and third all-state honor during her career. The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 22.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists — all increases from 2020 — to help propel the Warriors to a third-place finish in the state tournament.
“You enjoy playing against those girls, but at the same time it’s like, ‘Oh man, I have to play against Haleigh Timmer tonight,’” Swedlund said. “It just makes you realize how hard you have to work for it and one thing I take a lot of pride in is how hard I work. People say my parents make me do that, but I do it on my own.”
Koepsell is making her second appearance on the all-state team after being named to the third-team as a sophomore in 2019. The 6-foot senior averaged a double-double this season, averaging 19.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 51% from the field.
“I think I needed to improve my leadership on the floor and mid-range jump shot,” said Koepsell, who will attend Lake Area Tech for business and marketing management. “I’ve always been the person to stay at the block and shoot layups or that 6-foot jump shot, but I wanted to expand to a 15-foot jump shot and get to the rim from the 15-foot area.”

Fox is the youngest member of the first team and the freshman received all-state honors for the second time after being named second-team last year. MVP’s dynamic point guard averaged 19.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.3 steals. She also shot 51% overall and knocked down 60 3-pointers.
A three-time first-team all-state pick, Timmer posted 20.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists, while shooting 60.1% from the field and 53.3% from beyond the 3-point line. The 5-foot-11 guard led St. Thomas More to a fourth-place finish in the state tournament and is committed to play at South Dakota State University next season.
Another three-time first-team all-stater, Unruh poured in 23.8 points per game, while grabbing 4.6 rebounds this season for Sioux Falls Christian. The senior helped the Chargers to their first state tournament berth since 2013. Unruh is slated to play for Creighton University next year.
After making third-team all-state in 2020, Rosenquist moved up to the first-team by posting 20.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.9 steals for Dakota Valley. The 5-foot-8 junior also shot 52% from the field as the Panthers finished sixth at the state tournament this season.
The second team features Winner’s Kalla Bertram, Tea Area’s Katie Vasecka, West Central’s Cassidy Siemonsma, Hamlin’s Kami Wadsworth, Aberdeen Roncalli’s Madeyln Bragg and Rapid City Christian’s Olivia Kieffer.
The third team also includes Vermillion’s Lexi Plitzuweit, Redfield’s Addison Rozell, Garretson’s Lizzie Olson, Tea Area’s Olivia Ritter, Flandreau’s Claire Sheppard and Parkston’s Emma Yost.
