NATCHITOCHES – Not all errors are bad errors. That rang true for Northwestern State on Tuesday night where 23 of them led to a 3-1 (11-25, 14-25, 25-16, 14-25) loss to Central Arkansas, dropping NSU to 2-5 and 0-5 in Southland Conference play on the season.

The aggressive swings from the Lady Demons, that created as many kills as it did errors, led to 14 errors in the first two sets, losses of 25-11 and 25-14 respectively. In the two-error third, NSU hit .300, easily the best of the match, cruising to the 25-16 set winner. Seven errors in the final set however prevented a decisive fifth set in the match.

Four of UCA's first five points in the opening set came on NSU attack errors, the fifth on a service error. The early errors where due in part to the aggressive swings that head coach Sean Kiracofe wants his team taking.

"We were able to set up situations that we wanted in both serve receive and transition," Kiracofe said. "We created single blocks and splits for our attackers and we just hit it out. It came down to the errors, but we were able to create the situations that we wanted and taking that from the scout and executing it in the match was a positive."

While NSU had four early errors, the swings also resulted in kills for Audrey Quesnel, Breanna Burrell and Addison McDermott, giving NSU the 6-5 edge. The first of two long UCA scoring runs followed, stretching the lead to 11-6 and then again to 19-8 with six and seven straight points in each run.

"We took the aggressive swings that I want us taking and did that for a while because those can turn into point quickly," Kiracofe said. "They just fell an inch or two outside the court early on but we got frustrated after a while and gave them some easy balls. When you do that for a team with that much offensive talent across the net they're going to score."

The Sugar Bears had little trouble scoring in the second. Another long run – beginning at 8-1 and going to 14-2 – all but put things away. The 8-1 stretch turned a three-point game into a double-digit lead. Kills from Autumn Gentry and McDermott and a late 4-0 NSU run were not nearly enough to stymie the momentum for UCA who took the 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a completely different story for the Lady Demons. Cutting the errors to just two for the set, NSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead thanks to three UCA errors and kills form Quesnel and Darria Williams.

The Sugar Bears pulled to within three at 16-13 but a kill and ace from McDermott and another kill from Breanna Burrell pushed the Demons back ahead. Three more late UCA errors presented NSU with its first set point coming on an emphatic swing from Gentry giving NSU the 25-16 win.

The Lady Demons had just two errors through the first 12 UCA points in the fourth, seemingly maintain their edge from the productive third set and keeping pace at 12-9 on the scoreboard.

Four straight attack errors proved to be the downfall in the fourth sending UCA on a 7-0 run from which the Lady Demons could not recover. Three kills in the final five points put the match away for UCA.

"It doesn't show up on the scoreboard or in the box score but those errors were better," Kiracofe said. "The progress was there and now we start turning those just misses into points and things start to change."
