Haley Kirby, an athletic trainer at a private school in Mobile, was told last spring that schools were shut down and sports canceled.
She could choose to be furloughed indefinitely, her boss said, or go help at USA Health.
“So I showed up at USA Health on March 16 at 7 a.m., very pregnant.”
She found herself being interviewed by Natalie Fox, USA Health’s chief nursing officer. “She said ‘Obviously I can’t send you to swab noses, so let’s figure something out.’ I said, ‘Okay, let’s figure something out.’”
She started as a contract employee, had her baby in June, and then became a full-time employee.
Nominally Kirby is a patient navigator and coordinator at the USA Health Department of Neurology, though nowadays she’s working as a coordinator and liaison for the health system’s pandemic response team.
“So I went from being childless to having a child and a new career, mid-pandemic,” she said. “I’m not sure who gets a new job at seven months pregnant during a pandemic, but it happened.”
Her emotions run on two tracks, she said. Working in healthcare lets her see that the tide is turning.
“I’m in the really fortunate position where I am able to see the light, and that gives me hope,” she said.
At the same time, she said, “My heart goes out to people that don’t have as much information as I have been privy to, that maybe are missing that. Maybe missing that hope and being able to know that we’re getting there.”
“I’m overjoyed,” she said. “I have a baby, I have a new career, I have a whole new subset of friendships that I think have developed more deeply than a normal friendship would because of the state that we live in. … And then at the same time I’m filled with immense sadness because I have a new baby and a new subset of friends that can’t interact, or meet one another, or family that can’t meet my new family.”
