WWE might be leaving Florida for the first time in more than a year.
The last time WWE held a live event outside of the Sunshine State was way back in March 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to the company’s notoriously jam-packed touring schedule. But as more states begin to lift their pandemic-related restrictions, WWE is reportedly hoping to host just its second fan-filled event since the pandemic began.
According to F4WOnline’s Dave Meltzer (h/t PWMania), “The 2021 Summerslam event is currently planned to be the next WWE PPV with fans although plans could change.” WrestleVotes also reported that WWE was exploring multiple venues as a possible host site for SummerSlam, which would serve as an “official kickoff” for a “return to touring.” Meanwhile, Spectrum Sports 360’s Jon Alba adds that WWE could be headed “out west” for the event:
These reports are simply the latest indications that WWE will be leaving Florida for SummerSlam after previous hosting its first fan-filled event in more than a year, WrestleMania 37, in Tampa Bay.
PWInsider.com (h/t Wrestling Inc) reported last month that WWE could be headed to Texas or Arizona for SummerSlam: “There has been talk within WWE about possibly running SummerSlam in Phoenix, Arizona, or somewhere in Texas...WWE has not decided on a SummerSlam location just yet, but they are hoping to hold the show outdoors in a stadium setting, with fans in the crowd.”
Vince McMahon was reportedly “determined” to have fans at SummerSlam 2020, and though, in hindsight, those plans were clearly too ambitious at the time, one major factor could sway McMahon to go all in with a massive SummerSlam event this year. AEW, the No. 1 competitor to WWE, will host its upcoming pay-per-view Double or Nothing at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida at “full capacity.” AEW’s pay-per-view is expected to host as many as 5,500 fans, a number that WWE topped by roughly 13,000 fans for both nights at WrestleMania 37.
It’s that “full capacity” factor, however, that could cause McMahon to go even bigger than AEW.
WWE is reportedly looking to beat AEW to the punch by returning to touring before AEW does, with the expectation that WWE will do so in July or August. That would seemingly position WWE to head a state—other than Florida—without crowd capacity restrictions, with Texas being the obvious candidate. The MLB’s Texas Rangers have recently packed in a sellout crowd of more than 38,000 fans, and with WWE apparently eager to return to hosting live events, expect the company to do so with a bang.
SummerSlam, arguably the second biggest PPV on WWE’s calendar, makes sense as the company’s next show to be held with a sizable crowd and its first outside of Florida in nearly a year and a half. This, of course, will depend largely upon WWE finding a suitable venue as well as any potential changes in the Covid-19 pandemic, which could cause major sports organizations and venues to reduce crowd capacity.
While a lot of factors here will determine whether or not WWE leaves Florida for SummerSlam, the company looks determined to do so a year after McMahon was unable to get his wish.
