A common point of conjecture each November around the start of basketball season is which team will be the last one standing.
If you guess one of the girls basketball teams, you're right a high percentage of the time.
The success of programs like Central-Southeastern, Monroe City, Palmyra and Unity continues to make this region a hoops hotbed. A lot of successful teams have been blessed with incredible talent, which is why so many area players go on to star at the college level.
With that in mind, here is the area girls basketball all-decade team from 2010-19, as selected by Senior Sports Writer Matt Schuckman:
Blair Borrowman, Guard, Western-Payson, Class of 2018
No one will question Borrowman's toughness after she scored 31 points while playing with a broken fibula. The rest of her stats highlight her skill. She averaged 21.5 points while shooting 52 percent from the field and 89.9 percent from the line as a senior. The 2018 Herald-Whig Player of the Year and second-team all-state selection finished her career with 2,201 points and 740 rebounds before signing with Lindenwood.
Jordan Hildebrand, Forward, Unity, Class of 2017
The Unity girls basketball team became the first team in school history to play for a state championship with Hildebrand leading the charge as a senior. She averaged 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.34 steals while shooting 61 percent from the field to earn second-team all-state honors from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. The 2017 Herald-Whig Player of the Year and current Millikin standout was at her best in the postseason, averaging 16.6 points in seven games.
Nicole Kroeger, Guard, Palmyra, Class of 2017
Kroeger enjoyed one of the best careers in Palmyra history, finishing with 1,600 career points and earning Clarence Cannon Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior. The Northern Iowa recruit averaged 16.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5 assists and 3.1 steals to go along with 57 3-pointers made. The current Northern Iowa sharpshooter was a two-time all-state pick who averaged 17.2 points and shot 51 percent from 3-point range as a junior.
Laney Lantz, Guard, Central-Southeastern, Class of 2019
Quincy University's leading scorer last winter as a freshman, Lantz continues to do everything she did so well in high school. As a senior at Central-Southeastern when she earned first-team all-state honors from the Associated Press and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, Lantz averaged 21.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.7 steals. Lantz scored more than 2,000 points in her career and is C-SE's all-time leading scorer.
Ashton Luttrull, Guard, Highland, Class of 2013
A knee injury cost Luttrull her senior season, but by then she already had earned a scholarship to Southeast Missouri State and for good reason. A Class 3 all-state selection and the Clarence Cannon Conference Player of the Year as a junior, Luttrull averaged 20.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists. That came on the heels of averaging 18.3 points and 6.2 rebounds as a sophomore.
Vanessa Markert, Forward, Brown County, Class of 2015
As a senior, Markert earned her third straight first-team all-area selection and another second-team all-state nod by averaging 20.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.4 blocks, while shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 84.3 percent from the line. The 2015 Herald-Whig Player of the Year finished her career with 2,072 points and seven of the top 15 single-game scoring efforts in program history before moving on to play at Bradley.
Kolby McClelland, Forward, Central-Southeastern, Class of 2017
A second-team all-stater as a junior and the 2016 Herald-Whig Player of the Year, McClelland averaged 13.6 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting 51.6 percent from the field as the Panthers finished third at the Class 2A state tournament. As a senior, she played in the Panthers' first 20 games and averaged 14.5 points, 8 rebounds and 3.1 steals before a knee injury ended her season. The Murray State volleyball player still received first-team all-state honors from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Shea O'Brien, Guard, Pittsfield, Class of 2014
The ability to shoot and score from anywhere turned O'Brien into one of the area's most lethal weapons. She drained an area-best 64 3-pointers en route to averaging 19.7 points as a junior. A two-time first-team all-area and two-time all-state selection, O'Brien averaged 19.7 points and 3.5 steals as a senior, while making 52 3-pointers and shooting 82 percent from the line before signing with Missouri-St. Louis.
Jessica Redd, Center, Marion County, Class of 2012
A four-time Missouri Basketball Coaches all-state selection and the 2011 Herald-Whig Player of the Year, Redd powered the Mustangs to a state championship her junior year and a third-place state finish as a senior. She averaged 21.1 points and 9.5 rebounds and shot 62.6 percent from the field as a senior. Redd finished her career with 2,153 points and 1,101 rebounds and played at Truman State.
Jada Summers, Forward, Monroe City, Class of 2019
A three-time all-state selection, four-time All-Clarence Cannon Conference first-team pick and the 2019 Herald-Whig Player of the Year, Summers was a double-double machine, recording double digits in points and rebounds in 83 of 112 career games capped by a 36-point, 20-rebound effort against Palmyra in the district championship game her senior season. The current Culver-Stockton College standout finished her career with 2,230 points and career averages of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
