The first new water reservoir in Texas in nearly 30 years has started to be filled at Bois d’Arc Lake, according to the North Texas Municipal Water District.
Impoundment, or capturing, of the water in the 16,641-acre lake began nearly a week ago. Located northeast of Bonham in Fannin County, the reservoir will serve more than a dozen cities and 1.8 million people across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“We are excited to reach this major milestone that brings us one step closer to additional water supplies for the growing population NTMWD serves,” said Rodney Rhoades, NTMWD’s interim executive.
A 90-foot dam is being constructed and is expected to be finished by the end of the year. According to the NTMWD, it will take about a year for the lake level to be high enough to be used as a source of water for its intended cities.
Aside from providing water for D-FW cities, the lake will provide economic and recreational benefits for those in Fannin County, Rhoades said.
