Rockies’ road woes continue with walked-filled loss to Giants - The Denver Post

Wednesday night’s game was Exhibit A as to why the Rockies were picked by so many to finish last in the National League West.

In a 7-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, the Rockies:

* Issued nine walks and walked in three runs, two by starter German Marquez and another by Yency Almonte. It was just the third time in franchise history that the Rockies walked in three runs in a game.

“That’s unacceptable for a big-league pitching staff to walk nine guys,” manager Bud Black said.

The last time Rockies pitchers gifted three runs in a game was on July 31, 2008, in Florida, when Jorge De La Rosa walked in two runs and Kip Wells walked in one. The first time was on June 26, 1999, at San Diego when Mark Brownson walked in one and Chuck McElroy walked in two.

* Were no-hit for 5 1/2 innings by Alex Wood, who struck out nine.

* Closed the gap to 4-2 in the seventh, only to see the Giants score three runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of three walks and a wild pitch by Almonte.

* The Rockies, 9-15 overall, fell to 1-8 on the road where they have averaged just 2.6 runs per game.

Wood, utilizing an excellent slider, mowed the Rockies down through the first four innings.

“He had good command of the fastball down, a good slider down, and a changeup that he mixed in there,” Black said. “His fastball was crisp, the slider had a late break to it.”

Wood’s quest for perfection ended when Charlie Blackmon drew a one-out walk in the fifth.

Wood’s quest for a no-hitter ended with two outs in the sixth when Garrett Hampson hit a sinking line drive to right field. Curt Casali dove for the ball but couldn’t come up with the catch and Hampson raced to second with a double.

Colorado ended Wood’s night in the seventh. A leadoff walk by Ryan McMahon, a bloop single by C.J. Cron and an infield hit by Blackmon packed the bases. Yonathan Daza’s single to right scored McMahon, wrecking Wood’s shutout. Right-hander Camilo Doval entered the game and got Josh Fuentes to ground into a double play, but a run scored and the Giants’ lead was sliced to 4-2.

It was a strange night for Marquez. Toss out his ugly second inning and he did OK. But the four-run second inning was truly ugly. Marquez, who has struggled with fastball command all season, especially out of the stretch, walked three in the inning, twice with the bases loaded to force in two runs.

“For me, control has been bad all year,” Marquez said. “I just have to keep working on my delivery (in) the stretch.”

Marquez, as well as Black, are confident that Marquez’s mechanical issues will be fixed during his side sessions. Black noted that Marquez is still rushing through his delivery. Marquez, whose fastball hit 96-97 mph, is frustrated but confident he can solve the issue.

“It’s a little thing,” Marquez said. “I will be good.”

The Giants sent nine batters to the plate in the second, beginning with a leadoff single by Alex Dickerson. San Francisco had three hits in the inning, including Brandon Belt’s looping, two-out, two-run single to center.

Marquez, who has a 4.13 ERA after six starts, has walked 19 batters this season. His 5.2 walks per nine innings rank as third-highest in the majors.

He said he has not lost confidence.

“It was a bad game and those happen,” he said. “I have to forget about it and get ready for my next outing. Physically, I feel so nice, but I have to fix the little thing that will make me good.”

After losing two of three at San Francisco, the Rockies open a four-game series at Arizona on Thursday night.

On Deck
Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (1-3, 5.76 ERA) at Diamondbacks RHP Luke Weaver (1-2, 5.47)
7:40 p.m. Thursday, Chase Field
TV: AT&T SportsNet
Radio: KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM

Senzatela is searching for consistency. In his last start against the Phillies at Coors Field, he allowed four runs on five hits over five innings, walking three and striking out four. In his one road start this season, he got beat up, the Dodgers tagging him for five runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. The right-hander was sharp against the D-Backs on April 7 in Denver, pitching eight scoreless innings and allowing just four hits in Colorado’s 8-0 victory. Senzatela is 3-6 with a 5.43 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) vs. Arizona. He’s 2-3 with a 5.53 ERA in five career starts at Chase Field. Weaver is coming off a loss to the Braves in which he served up four runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. Five of the six hits Weaver allowed went for extra bases, including a two-run homer by Austin Riley in the second inning. Weaver is 1-2 with a 6.84 ERA in seven games (six starts) vs. Colorado.

Trending: Over his first nine games, new first baseman C.J. Cron batted 4-for-29 with no home runs. Then he heated up. Entering Wednesday night’s game, he was 15-for-43 (.349) with four home runs, two doubles and 11 RBIs over his last 13 games. Over his last seven games, he’s mashed four homers.

At issue: Infielder Josh Fuentes is an aggressive hitter but he could use some restraint at the plate. He entered Wednesday’s game batting just .176. Fuentes was the only player in the majors with no walks and at least 50 plate appearances, and his 63.2 swing percentage was the highest in the majors.

Pitching Probables
Friday: Rockies RHP Jon Gray (3-1, 2.54) at Diamondbacks LHP Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 6.31), 7:40 p.m., ATTRM
Saturday: Rockies LHP Austin Gomber (1-3, 6.65) at Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (1-0, 2.16), 6:10 p.m.
