Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was not discouraged after an interception-filled practice amid a torrential downpour at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
"We wanted to be aggressive today within the pass game. We wanted to see if we could fit throws in," Tagovailoa said after at least four of his passes were picked off. "We wanted to see what throws we could make under these conditions. We were just trying to throw the ball vertical down the field.
"Obviously, you want to be smart, but if there's a time to make mistakes, now's a time to make mistakes."
Tagovailoa added that it was "really good" to get experience in the heavy rain.
"We're going to have to play in the rain. We're going to have to play in conditions where the ball is going to be wet, where it's gonna be cold, it's gonna be hot," he said. "Overall, was an all right day."
With lightning around the Dolphins' facility, media members were evacuated from the bleachers Tuesday afternoon.
Tagovailoa, 23, is entering his second NFL season after being drafted No. 5 in 2020. This is his first full offseason after spending 2020 recovering from hip surgery that ended his final season at Alabama.
Meanwhile, All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard is absent from mandatory minicamp due to concerns over his contract.
"It's pretty clear this is a contract situation, which we've talked about internally," head coach Brian Flores said before Tuesday's practice. "X is a little bit of a unique situation. He was extended and now we're talking about a potential renegotiation after one year. Those turn into longer conversations. We understand that."
Howard, who turns 28 next month, led the NFL with 10 interceptions last season after tying for the league lead with seven in 2018. He signed a five-year, $75.3 million extension in May 2019 and is due $12.1 million in the second year of that deal in 2021.
