HEARNE, Texas (KBTX) - A Hearne man says he and others are lucky to still be alive after narrowly escaping a fast-moving fire Saturday night inside his apartment.
Around 10:45 p.m., Victor Carter and his roommate were home when suddenly smoke began to fill their apartment in the 100 block of Rose Marie Boulevard. They found the smoke was coming from the kitchen where a skillet full of grease ignited after a stove burner was accidentally left on and unattended.
“I was calling 911 from my bedroom and that’s when my roommate hollered and told me to get out of there. So, I made my way and the smoke got so thick and so bad until you couldn’t even see,” said Carter.
Getting out of his apartment wasn’t an easy task. Carter uses a walker to get around so but he moved as quickly as possible.
“It was scary but the only thing I could do was try my best to get out. I thought about breaking the window but I was afraid of getting caught in the glass while getting out. I just held my breath and tried to make my way through it as quickly as possible,” said Carter. “My neighbor upstairs also uses a walker and wheelchair. Everyone got out and the main thing is we’re still alive. All the other things are material and they can be replaced.”
Carter’s dog was the only one that didn’t make it out alive. She was found under a bed and Carter believes it’s the smoke that got to her.
“I’m blessed everyone got out but I hate to lose my pet. She was like family, like my kid, but I’m just glad nobody was hurt.”
Carter is staying with a family member who also resides in the same complex. The American Red Cross was called to the scene Saturday night to assist those who were temporarily displaced.
The Calvert Fire Department also responded to the scene to assist with the blaze.
We did reach out to both Hearne Police and Fire to get more information but nobody was available on Sunday to speak with us.
