ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester woman accused of killing her infant over the weekend was arraigned on Thursday.

Mabel Enid Rosado-Delgado, 38, appeared virtually before a Rochester City Court judge Thursday morning. A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf. Police say she's charged with a single count of second-degree murder in the death of her 3-month-old daughter Karen.

According to authorities, Rosado-Delgado beat the child so severely that she suffered skull fractures. On Sunday morning, police say the mother drove the child to the emergency department at Rochester General Hospital where staff noted that the little girl appeared to be dead. Attempts at lifesaving measures were not successful.

At her arraignment in city court, through an interpreter, Rosado-Delgado said "I didn't do it."

The prosecution in the case spoke after the hearing.

"Any time you have allegations of child abuse, especially that are this heinous and ultimately led to the child's death, I'm outraged, I'm angry, my office is angry," said prosecutor Hillary Levitt. "And really, frankly, the community at large should be angry. I do look forward to seeking justice for this infant and ultimately holding the person responsible.

“We have so many amazing resources in our community that can help mothers, and there are places that you can seek assistance ... but that didn't happen in this case.”

“Every parent has times where they are stressed,” said Sherita Bullock, executive director of Healthy Baby Network. “Oftentimes the difference between being stressed and things going horribly wrong is the information that that parent has, the resources that are around them, and the help that they're able to access.”

Healthy Baby Network is an agency which, for 25 years in Rochester, has provided many of those resources to parents. Bullock says asking for help — or even realizing the need for it — can often be difficult.

“We don't want people to feel as though they're going to be persecuted if they ask for help,” she said. “We want to be here to support all of our parents in the help that they need. And we also want to acknowledge that we have some parents who need lots of support.”

Support which prosecutors believe could have saved the life of a 3-month-old girl.

The public defender in the case did not speak after court.

Rosado-Delgado is being held in jail without bail. Her next scheduled court appearance is June 22.
