COLUMBUS, Ohio—With Larry Householder becoming the first Ohio House member to be expelled in more than 150 years, it’s now up to his former GOP colleagues to appoint someone to fill his seat.

Under legislative rules, House Speaker Bob Cupp will name a screening committee to review applications from and interview applicants to represent House District 72, which covers Perry County, Coshocton County, and parts of Licking County in East Central Ohio.

That screening committee will recommend finalists to the full 63-member House GOP caucus, which in turn will appoint one of them to finish the year and a half remaining on Householder’s term.

Cupp announced Thursday that House District 72 resident interested in taking Householder’s seat should submit a cover letter and resume to HD72Appointment@ohiohouse.gov by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23.

The screening committee will conduct interviews on Thursday, June 24, according to Cupp’s release.

When Cupp was asked Wednesday whether he believed the vacancy needed to be filled before the end of the month, when the legislature typically goes on summer break, Cupp -- who’s known for being tight-lipped -- replied: “I can’t really answer that question.”

Kevin Black, a financial adviser and military veteran who ran an unsuccessful 2018 GOP primary campaign against Householder, said Thursday he will seek the appointment, as he previously vowed to do.

Black said he’s heard that others are interested in seeking the appointment, though he said he didn’t know anyone in particular.
