YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan University has created a new chief diversity officer position and filled it with a tenured professor of communications.
Doris Fields, a professor in the School of Communications, Media and Theatre Arts, will serve on an interim basis while the role is filled permanently at a later date, university officials said in a news release. The creation of the job was announced earlier this month at a Board of Regents meeting.
Fields will report to President James Smith and to EMU Provost Rhonda Longworth. The position is considered a senior leadership role.
Fields will develop policy recommendations to “enhance diversity, equity and inclusion” across the EMU campus, she said in the release.
“I began my academic journey at EMU as a freshman in 1986,” she said in a statement. “Since then, I have been a graduate student, part-time instructor, faculty member, and administrator at EMU. To continue my work as the interim chief diversity officer is an honor.”
EMU’s student population is more proportionately represented by race and ethnicity compared to the state of Michigan. EMU’s student population of 13,527 students as of fall 2020, is 17% Black and 7% Hispanic. Michigan as a whole is 13.7% Black and 4.8% Hispanic according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The new diversity officer position will serve the campus population, Smith said in a statement.
“As one of the most diverse public universities in Michigan, this is a vital role that further reinforces the University’s historic support of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures,” he said. “We embrace our rich heritage as an institution of opportunity and the important role we play in the social mobility of our students.”
Fields specializes in interracial and interethnic communication, the release states. Prior to her move to chief diversity officer, she served as EMU’s assistant vice president of academic programs and initiatives.
“Professor Fields brings a wealth of experience to this role, including more than 20 years of exceptional service to the University,” Smith said. “We are grateful for her stepping up to serve in this important role.”
The diversity officer job was created as a result of the recommendation of the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion launched by EMU in 2018.
“The chief diversity officer’s responsibilities will include, among other tasks, developing and implementing the University’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan and leading the Office of Diversity and Community Involvement,” the release states.
