Canadiens GM Kent Hughes on Ben Chiarot: 'If the right deal is there, we'll do it' - The Athletic

Canadiens GM Kent Hughes said he's "received a lot of phone calls" on Ben Chiarot and is willing to trade the defenseman but will only do so if the trade makes sense for the team.

“If the right deal is there, we’ll do it," Hughes said. "We’ll do it today. We don’t need to wait to let the market establish itself and make sure we get the best deal. If we think it’s the right deal, we’ll do it.”

Chiarot is currently on injured reserve for a lower-body injury suffered against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Saturday. In 44 games this season, Chiarot has four goals and nine points. The Hamilton, Ont. native is in the final year of a three-year contract with an annual average value of $3.5 million and could be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Chiarot joined the Canadiens ahead of the 2018-19 season and has 15 goals and 37 points in 154 career games with the franchise.

The Canadiens are expected to be sellers ahead of the March 21 NHL trade deadline. The team traded Tyler Toffoli to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a first and fifth-round draft choice, Tyler Pitlick and prospect Emil Heineman.

Hughes also acknowledged that defenceman Jeff Petry could be moved if the team finds a trade that works. The defenceman has two goals and seven points in 41 games this season.
