Johnson: Letter filled with not so truthful stiff - Your Valley

As if we didn’t have enough of disinformation, imagine my shock and disappointment that the Sun City West Independent chose to publish Mr. Anderson’s letter (“Response to letter against Donald Trump,” Sun City Independent, Feb. 2, 2022) defending Donald Trump.

I can’t imagine any critic of Trump being unable to “name one thing he did wrong as president,” as claimed by Mr. Anderson, so I will assume that statement is untrue as well. I can also assume Mr. Anderson does not have access or knowledge of Google because a search of any of his claims would provide multiple sources of the truth.. As for the couple of paragraphs describing Trump’s accomplishments, let’s just break them down.

Trump did not come close to almost “complet(ing) a border wall along our southern border.”

Before he took office, there were 654 miles  of barrier along the southern border. Now, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the southern border has 669 miles of “primary barrier”  and 65 miles of “secondary barrier.” This means that in areas where no barricades existed before, they have built 15 miles of new, primary barrier. And by the way, Mexico didn’t pay a penny for any of it. While we’re on the southern border, Google “Obama’s deportation numbers compared to Trump,” you won’t hear about that on FOX News.

Trump did not get us “energy independence until Joe Biden stopped it.”

In 2019, (the year we were supposedly “energy independent,” the U.S. imported 9.1  million barrels of petroleum per day from about 90 countries. That’s the lowest level of total petroleum imports since 1996, but the U.S. still uses imports to help supply domestic and international markets, according to the Energy Information Administration. There are conflicting opinions on exactly what constitutes energy independence but oil and gas experts agree it is ”practically and realisiclly unattainable for the U.S. in the forseeable future.” The Keystone pipeline would have moved oil from Canada, not the Dakotas, to refineries in the Gulf. Google “pros and cons of the Keystone pipeline” to form your own opinion on it’s benefits to the U.S.

Barack Obama was not responsible for ‘most of 70,000 factories moving to China.”

U.S. factories started moving to China in the early 2000’s after a Republican controlled Congress, with the support of President Bill Clinton, approved the US-China trade agreement and cleared the way for China to join the World Trade Organization. Although the impact of the effect on U.S. manufacturing was grossly underestimated, we have no one to blame but ourselves for preferring cheaply made goods from China. U.S. manufacturing has actually been moving to China since the 1970s, peaking in the 1980s. In any case, Obama had nothing to do with it.

As for the rest of Mr. Anderson’s claims about the booming economy, etc., my personal economy would be booming too if I maxed out all my credit cards to the tune of adding $7.8 trillion (with a “T”) to my debt — that’s what Trump did for us. The blather about open borders, welfare thieves and drugs coming across the border is more tired old stuff from FOX News. Change the channel, Andy, and next time don’t forget to Google.
