The Great Chocolate Showdown was back for its fourth episode and it was definitely one of the most stressful. Mirror glaze and remaking cheesecake and Sweet Georgia Browns (like a chocolate turtle) are not for the faint of heart.
This episode started off with the technical challenge. The challenge began with judge Anna Olson showing the bakers how to make a multi-colored mirror glaze. A mirror glaze is basically a chocolate glaze that is so shiny it looks like it could reflect like a mirror. It’s…not the easiest thing in the world to make when it’s only one color, but swirling together multiple colors makes it even more difficult.
Most of the bakers did a pretty good job. They created mirror glazes in colors that represented the flavors in their desserts and they looked absolutely gorgeous.
The twist of the challenge was that only four of the desserts (the ones that looked the best) would be tasted and only those four bakers would have the chance to get immunity.
Bakers worked with mirror glaze in this week’s Great Chocolate Showdown
The four bakers chosen were Casey, Kathy, Fadi, and Vanessa with Casey and Kathy winning immunity. Casey made a peanut butter and jelly mirror glaze cake and Kathy made a juniper and lime mirror glaze cake with Casey having the top dessert. Not gonna lie, I would totally eat that whole PB&J cake.
But I also think Renu was absolutely robbed. Her cake looked amazing and the fact that she wasn’t chosen was probably the worst decision the judges have made this season.
Next up was the elimination challenge! The bakers had to make a dessert that combined the flavors of cheesecake and Sweet Georgia Browns. I had no idea what Sweet Georgia Browns were but once they explained it on the show I was like “Oh! Chocolate turtles. YUM!”
The bakers made some really unique creations. T made a strawberry chocolate cheesecake eclair that I would probably eat at least four of in one sitting and Fadi made a gorgeous miso cheesecake brownie.
Trinity made a pot de creme that sadly didn’t set up and was more like a chocolate soup. Vanessa baked a dark chocolate brownie cheesecake topped with chocolate mousse and a white chocolate feuilletine biscuit that didn’t stand up to the judges’ scrutiny and Renu made a dark chocolate cheesecake with cinnamon caramel whiskey sauce that was, unfortunately, a little overcooked.
T and Fadi were the top two with Fadi taking the top spot!
The bottom three, as you may have guessed, included Renu, Trinity, and Vanessa. I was so scared Renu was going to go home. She has done amazing in the competition up to this point. But it turned out I didn’t need to worry. Trinity was the one to go home this week and considering she has only been baking for months, her work has been very impressive up.
Next week, the bakers are learning how to make bonbons from judge Cynthia Stroud and then have to team up to recreate Black Forest cake-inspired desserts.
