A slate of anti-immigrant, anti-trans, pro-death penalty resolutions proffered by a Harris County GOP precinct chair drew outrage from Democrats and scorn from Republicans, though the opposing sides remained at odds over the correct outcome.

Carla Richburg of Cypress, chair of GOP precinct 602, proposed eight resolutions to the party platform, including outlawing all sex education in schools; mandatory death penalties for anyone convicted of murdering a police officer or murders committed during other felonies; a call to “wage war against all invaders” related to Texas borders that authorizes deadly force; considering all Chinese nationals as spies and removing them from the country; refusal to recognize transgender identification; and removal of the word “marriage” from official documents.

The resolutions were roundly rejected by the local Republican party’s advisory board, which forwarded them to voters, noting, “we unanimously condemn the tone and content.”

“Even the consideration of resolution with this salacious rhetoric would embarrass and impugn the integrity of this body,” the advisory board wrote.

Richburg and the local GOP leadership did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

Democrats, who began lambasting the local GOP over the weekend, demanded more action on Monday morning. They called for Richburg to be removed.

“The hate-filled priorities list she submitted is indefensible and not legitimate political discourse,” Harris County Democratic Party chair Odus Evbagharu said in a statement. “We condemn the promotion of hatred in any form and will continue to call out anyone who attempts to magnify messages of hate.”

The calls for Richburg to resign follow by eight months demands by Democrats for a member of their own caucus to step aside. Former county precinct chair John Behrman resigned from his Democratic post in June after suggesting two rising members of the local party — one being Evbagharu — were suspect because of their Nigerian descent.

On social media, state Republicans were quick the denounce the proposals but also defend their processes and stopped short of saying Richburg must resign.

“(Texas Democrats) know there is no legal remedy to remove Carla Richburg,” state GOP vice-chair Cat Parks said in a tweet. “Should she be primaried and beaten? Without question.”

The controversy comes as both parties are preparing for a flurry of primary activities and campaigning in advance of what is likely to be a contentious general election. Early voting in the primaries runs Feb. 14-25, with election day on March 1.
