Thousands gathered at Clinton Square to celebrate as Syracuse’s mayor set fire to a model of a Salina Street drawbridge – a final effigy to the end of the Erie Canal.
It was 1924 and the bridge was going to come down, continuing the work of eliminating the canal which had defined the city for a century.
