A 16-foot truck from Programs to Educate All Cyclists that was filled with bicycles used to empower people with disabilities was stolen out of Lincoln Park Monday night and has been recovered.
That update came Friday morning from John Waterman, founder and executive director of PEAC, a nonprofit organization.
According to Waterman, the truck was stolen from its Lincoln Park building and recovered with damage to the ignition.
Every single bicycle inside, which was targeted for a child or individual in need of transportation, was stolen.
It is not clear where the truck was located or if Lincoln Park police played a part in its recovery.
Lincoln Park police have not returned calls for comment on this report.
Waterman said someone spotted the truck and reported it.
“It’s amazing how people came together to help,” Waterman said of the public support that galvanized after the theft.
The truck was essential to the operation of PEAK’s programs for school-based programs and its summer cycling program.
Waterman thanked everyone who reached out to help and was relieved that the truck was located.
Nevertheless, a lot was lost in the theft and it is unclear how PEAC will move forward.
