Over the last decade, the Detroit Catholic Central wrestling program has put itself into the argument of being the greatest wrestling program of all time. Thanks to claiming eight state Division 1 championships in the last 11 seasons -- not forgetting the seven team titles between 1969 and 1988 -- Catholic Central has put together an unmatched culture of dominance that the Metro Detroit area has never seen in the sport.
When MLive listed the top 25 records in Metro Detroit history this morning, Catholic Central’s dynasty of the last decade landed at the top thanks to a multitude of records.
“As far as it goes in Division 1, I think we’ve set the standard,” Catholic Central coach Mitch Hancock told MLive during the season. “I think we’ve separated ourselves from other teams in Division 1, but those teams and programs (in other divisions), they’ve created their own traditions. They’ve created their own storied histories. There’s nothing to compare ourselves with when it come to that. I think we’re just focused on ourselves and trying to separate ourselves from the rest of the teams in the state.”
Catholic Central owned the 2010′s, becoming the first team to ever win seven team championships in a specific decade. The Shamrocks are also one of two teams to ever win eight team championships in 11 season, with the other being Hudson of Division 4 from 2009-2019. This last season, Catholic Central became just the second Division 1/Class A team to win four-straight team titles as it looks to match Davison's record of five in a row next winter.
During it's dominant team title run, Catholic Central won the 2018 team title over Brighton, 51 to -1, marking the first time a team was shutout and held to negative points in the title match. The dominant victory gave the Shamrocks to the state record for largest margin of victory ever in a championship meet.
Catholic Central has also won 26 consecutive Catholic High School League championships and 26 consecutive district titles. It also has 12 straight region championships.
Of course, Catholic Central was able to capture so many team titles because of the bountiful individual talent the program has churned out over the years.
Alongside the four straight team titles, Catholic Central has had a record 23 individual state champions during that span. In 2019 Catholic Central set a new Division 1 record with seven individual champions, as Josh Edmond won 135 pounds, Derek Gilcher won 140, Kevon Davenport won 145, Cameron Amine won 152, Easton Turner won 189, Brendin Yatooma won 215 and Steven Kolcheff won 285. Davenport became the program's first four-time individual winner in the process.
This last winter, Catholic Central nearly matched its feat from 2019 by sending a record nine individuals to the championship round, crowning six individual state champions in the process. Edmond (140), Gilcher (160), Yatooma (215) and Kolcheff (285) each won again this last winter while Dylan Gilcher (112) and Manuel Rojas (189) won as well.
“We come in expecting to do that,” Kolcheff told MLive this winter. “For us to expect 14 individuals to qualify for states and five or six or more to win a state title, that’s just a cherry on top for us. But the main focus for this team has always been a team state title. Individual accolades come later.”
Catholic Central has had more three-time champions in the last 10 seasons than anyone other team, including Edmond, Derek Gilcher, Alec Mooradian, Ken Bade, Drew Garcia, Benyamin Kamali and Cameron Amine.
A whopping 48 of Catholic Central’s 87 total individual state champions in program history have come through the program from the start of the 2010 season through 2020. St. Johns of Division 2 is the next closest program, having accumulated 30 individual titles within that span.
