At the 2020 BET Awards, Chloe x Halle proved their multifaceted talent once again, oscillating easily from shrewd gazes to sensual choreography against the backdrop of their perfectly in-sync harmonies.
Though this year’s BET Awards were held virtually to abide by social distancing guidelines, the event set a new standard for what award shows should feel like in 2020: inspiring, creative, and well-produced. The three-hour event, coincidentally the show’s 20th anniversary, was hosted by TV personality Amanda Seales and honored the work of Black musicians, actors, and sports figures.
The night featured numerous performances from artists such as DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, Jennifer Hudson, Lizzo, Alicia Keys, Summer Walker and Usher, Anderson. Paak, Jonathan McReynolds and Megan Thee Stallion. Dynamic duo Chloe x Halle also gave one of the standout performances of the night, when they played two songs from their recently-released album, Ungodly Hour.
The sisters opened their two-song set with haunting harmonies before belting into "Forgive Me,” donning black latex outfits and dancing on a set that replicated their music video. The screen then switched to a brighter set with Chloe x Halle in all white for their song “Do It” in what appeared to be a red inflatable box. Before the song finished, the two sets appeared side-by-side, with the latex-clad Chloe x Halle competing in synchronized dance battle against the angelic versions of themselves.
Chloe x Halle’s performance wasn’t the only memorable part of this year’s BET Awards. The show gave moving tributes to both Little Richard and Kobe Bryant as part of its “In Memoriam” segment.
Additionally, former First Lady Michelle Obama presented Beyoncé with the Humanitarian Award. In her acceptance speech, Beyoncé encouraged viewers to vote “like our life depends on it, because it does” in the upcoming U.S. election, and to “dismantle a racist and unequal system.”
