These past few weeks, the only question I've been asked more often than "When can we start going to garage sales again?" is "Can I have a garage sale?"
The great news is, the state gave approval Wednesday for garage sales to return in Western New York -- under new guidelines, of course.
Here's the scoop from Pamm Lent at Empire State Development: Garage sales and yard sales take place on private property, not in a retail setting. That means they're governed by the same rules that outlaw non-essential gatherings of more than 25 people. The same rules apply to person-to-person sales like those on Facebook Marketplace on Craigslist.
So what do you have to do to follow those rules, according to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Executive Order? Well, if you hold a yard sale, you'll have to make sure:
- There are no more than 25 people present in the sale space at any time (including yourself)
- Everyone keeps a distance of six feet. If you can't maintain a six-foot distance with 25 people, you'll have to limit your capacity to fewer than 25 people.
- Anyone getting closer than six feet (assume that means everyone) wears a face covering.
- Hand hygiene supplies (such as hand sanitizer) are available, and follow regular cleaning and disinfection protocols.
Whether you're shopping a garage sale or hosting one, be cautious. A good rule of thumb is to act as if everyone and everything is carrying the coronavirus.
If you're not ready to police what could turn out to be a coronavirus circus on your front lawn, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and other person-to-person sales websites might be more your speed. Just remember to be cautious with those, too. Meet in a public, well-lit place, such as store plaza or police parking lot. Or try a sales app such as Mercari or Poshmark that requires no personal contact.
Now for what to sell.
There is high demand for certain reasonably priced stuff. At the same time, lots of folks are watching their pennies and would rather buy used for a bargain than new at full price.
If you have any of these sitting in your garage or basement, you can make some good cash right now:
- Bicycles
- Kayaks
- Shorts, especially for kids
- Chest freezers
- Portable wood-burning fire pits
- Trampolines
- Patio furniture
- Swimming pools, including inflatable ones
- Air conditioners
- Lawn mowers
- Generators
- Anything that can be used to enjoy the outdoors, especially in one's own backyard.
There are also the old standbys that always do well at garage sales: tools, vintage dishes, vintage games and toys, antique fishing rods and tackle, camping gear, sporting goods and children's clothing in excellent condition.
Note: if you're sad the World's Largest Yard Sale scheduled for June 19 and 20 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds was canceled, you'll be happy to know it was rescheduled for Sept. 18 and 19.
