A leaking tanker truck was removed from the I-95 ramp at Route 13 early Saturday morning.

The four-compartment, 8,000-gallon tanker overturned on the ramp in Bristol Township just after 6 p.m. The truck damaged the guardrail and tipped onto its side in the single-vehicle crash.

Three of the four compartments of the tanker were filled with potentially dangerous materials. One compartment had a corrosive agent and two had combustible materials, said Edgely Fire Company Chief Brian Cirard.

“We had a very volatile situation,” Ciard said.

The truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital by the Bucks County Rescue Squad for non-life-threatening injuries.

In addition to numerous local firefighters, crews from the Bucks County Hazardous Incident Response Team and the Dow Chemical Response Team from the Bristol facility were on the scene. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protect also responded.

Due to the potential for a fire, crews stretched 6,000 feet on hose from a hydrant at the Wawa on Green Lane to the ramp, Ciard said.

Responders tested the air numerous times and contained the spill.

No evacuations were required.

After the scene was secured and heavy wreckers were brought in to move the vehicle, firefighters left the scene more than 13 hours after the crash on Saturday morning.

Repair crews remained on the scene Saturday morning to work on the damaged guardrail.

The crash was under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police out of King of Prussia.

Crews from the Florence (New Jersey), Levittown No. 2, Newportville, Newport, Penndel, Third District, Upper Makefield, and Warwick fire companies responded to the scene with the specialty units.

Some of the firefighters on scene were up for more than than a day due to Friday morning’s fire in Levittown.
