Embroidery is for everyone: If I can do it, so can you - Daily Californian

When thinking of embroidery, the detailed handiwork of my grandmother’s old tablecloths comes to mind. She was hunched over in the dark for hours at a time, expertly weaving her needle into the fabric. Embroidery seemed like a hobby for older women who feel an urge to be craftsy, and not for college students. But recently, finding myself stuck at home for the foreseeable future, I decided to give it a try and I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. Here are some reasons you should give it a shot too!

It’s easy

Embroidery is surprisingly easy! All you need is an embroidery hoop, fabric, needle, embroidery floss and a pattern. When I first looked at my pattern, I panicked at the number of seemingly complex stitches involved. But, it turns out that many stitches, though they look difficult, are incredibly easy to learn. Also, there are tons of quick embroidery tutorials on YouTube to help you get started.

It’s relaxing

Similar to other crafts such as knitting that consist of basic repetitive actions, embroidery can be a mindless and even meditative experience. Stitching the needle back-and-forth through the fabric to make a colorful design is a calming activity that can help you wind down. Plus, embroidery is more suited for hot weather than knitting. No one wants to knit a scarf in summer.

It’s productive

It feels like such an accomplishment to make something from scratch with your own hands. And when you’re done, you have a piece of art to hang up on your wall! The best part is you can even do it while you’re watching TV. Additionally, it can even be an outlet for your pent-up anger — repetitively jabbing a needle into a piece of fabric is a mature alternative to screaming or breaking things.

It’s creative

You can personalize your embroidery with any colors and patterns you want. With a little effort, you can pretty much embroider any design you choose. A cactus, a dinosaur, your favorite movie quote — you name it and you can embroider it! You can also look on Pinterest for some super unique designs to try and embroider!

Channel your inner 90-year-old woman as you engage in an art form that has been practiced for centuries. You will impress all your family and friends with your beautiful handmade embroidery, and it is the perfect calming activity to express yourself this summer!
