FLINT, MI -- More than a year after opening, a young Flint entrepreneur is back scooping ice cream to put a smile on the faces of customers.
The Scoop ice cream shop looks to inspire entrepreneurship in kids on the north side of Flint.
Dozens of flavors are available at the hand dipped and soft serve ice cream shop located next to Courtside Cuts Barber Shop on the corner of Chevrolet Avenue and Flushing Road.
Omar Harris and Montez Brown, co-own Courtside Cuts, at 1107 North Chevrolet Avenue, a barber shop that opened in 2014. The men decided to open an ice cream store next door after Harris’ daughter, Sydney Owens, approached him about starting her own business.
New ice cream shop in Flint gives kids scoop on entrepreneurship
Sydney Owens, now 15, was in charge of the shop Monday, June 15. The store is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. all week.
“My dad wanted to curate a black-owned business where all his children can share a part of and just create a happy environment for people to come, get ice cream, just be happy,” Owens said.
It feels good to be involved in a community business, Owens said. She hopes her business will help inspire other young people to start their own businesses as well.
“If I can do it, you can do it,” she said.
People have continued to support The Scoop through COVID-19 regulations, Owens said.
The Scoop serves ice cream classics like Rocky Road, Tennessee Toffee and Superman, in addition to less traditional flavors like banana pudding, caramel apple, cookie jar, bubble gum and lemon meringue pie.
Owens said her favorite flavor is either cookies and cream or banana pudding.
