Gov. Ron DeSantis scheduled what he called a “major announcement” for Thursday at noon. Education commissioner Richard Corcoran and a host of school district officials were slated to be on hand. Then DeSantis proceeded to discuss how the AAU would host the summer Junior Olympics in Brevard County. For nearly 35 minutes. Many education advocates began to speculate on social media that no education announcement was coming. Read on for what happened next, and more Florida education news.
DeSantis said the reveal of the youth sports event seemed a good place to talk about school reopening. He then discussed how he wanted to see K-12 campuses at ‘full capacity’ in August. Local districts are to work out the details.
How well will that idea go over? Nearly half of Hillsborough County parents and staff surveyed said they’re uncomfortable returning to campus. Hillsborough superintendent Addison Davis says his team is working on a plan with such concerns in mind. • Pasco County’s superintendent tried to explain his district’s efforts to a large PTA group. Then they got Zoom bombed. • The Lake County school district is collecting community input before making any decisions, the Daily Commercial reports. • Polk County, too, the Ledger reports. • Santa Rosa County parents say they’re ready, WEAR reports.
It’s not a mandate, remember. Some south Florida school districts might go a different way, the Sun-Sentinel reports. • Leon County superintendent Rocky Hanna, by contrast, says the announcement was what he had been waiting for, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.
There will be money. DeSantis also gave an overview of how the state intends to distribute CARES Act funds for schools to recover after (amid?) COVID-19, Florida Politics reports. • Florida also has won approval to redirect about $10 million from a federal charter school startup fund to help existing charters provide distance learning as needed, Chalkbeat reports.
Whenever schools reopen, one of Pinellas County’s high schools will have a new leader. Barry G. Brown grew up not far from Gibbs High.
Some schools will begin offering in-person services this summer. The Martin County School Board is letting the Boys and Girls Clubs provide a camp on one district campus, TC Palm reports.
Several colleges and universities won’t be using ACT and SAT test scores for admission decisions. But that doesn’t mean teens should skip the exams, advisers tell the Gainesville Sun.
Band camp is coming. Social distancing guidelines could make it tough for a full group practice, though, the Panama City News Herald reports.
Already involved in summer practices? Stay safe. The Hillsborough school district announces new safety procedures aimed at preventing heat-related tragedies at athletic activities.
There’s been an education bill sighting. A measure to double fines for drivers who pass stopped school buses lands on the governor’s desk, Florida Politics reports.
He’s tired of words. James Golden, Manatee County’s only Black School Board member, wants his colleagues to take action against racism in schools rather than just talk about it, the Herald-Tribune reports. • The district is contemplating introducing implicit bias training, the Bradenton Herald reports.

Before you go ... It’s been a chaotic couple of months, with COVID-19 and racial equity protests high on the list of issues occupying everyone’s minds. A new survey from America’s Promise Alliance indicates that the cumulative effect on teens is overwhelming for many. Among the results, “More than half of young people (52%) are much more concerned than usual about their own and their family’s physical and emotional health, 39% are more concerned about their current and future education, and 30% are more concerned about having their basic needs met.” Read more about it here.
