The vacant seat on the Sandwich School Committee will be filled by appointment instead of going through a special election.
Town Meeting this week voted to allow the school board and selectmen to hold a joint meeting to appoint the new member rather than holding a special election, as the town charter dictates. Town Clerk Taylor White said at the time that planning for the election could cost upwards of $15,000 between staffing and purchasing the materials needed to run the election.
The seat was left vacant when former member Angela Dalpe-Healy resigned in May with one year left in her term.
Even though the voters have given their approval for the appointment, the decision will not be immediate.
"The Town Manager is working on the legislation with Town Counsel," said Assistant Town Manager Heather Harper. "A meeting date has not yet been discussed that I'm aware of."
Superintendent Pamela A. Gould said that she has heard from two people who are interested in serving the one-year remainder of Ms. Dalpe-Healy's term. One of those people has expressed their interest in writing while the other has said as much verbally. She has not disclosed who those people are at this time.
