CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Finally we get the return of the football everyone has been waiting for! Preseason NFL football is back and the Browns, as well as many others across the NFL, are thankful they will return in 2021.
The reminder worth noting is that this season will only have three preseason games, different than the usual four, due to the NFL expanding the regular season to 17 games. There are some interesting quirks in this new preseason schedule for the Browns.
The Browns open on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Jacksonville. The 7 p.m. game (WEWS, Channel 5) will feature the debut of Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, the new Jaguars head coach, who comes in with extreme interest from the state of Ohio. It is also likely to be the debut of No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Clemson. The Browns’ return to Cleveland for their single home game which is slated for Sunday, Aug. 22 against the New York Giants at 1 p.m. (WEWS, Channel 5). It is quite rare to see early Sunday preseason games but Browns fans will welcome the tune-up for the season opener a few weeks later. The Browns close the preseason with a Sunday, Aug. 29 game at Atlanta, to be shown on primetime NBC at 8 p.m. (WKYC, Channel 3). There the Browns will get a chance to see Kyle Pitts from Florida who the Falcons selected fourth overall in the 2021 draft.

With the schedule adjustment, AFC teams will have nine regular-season home games and one preseason home game in 2021, then eight and two, respectively, in 2022. That pattern will continue going forward and will be a new adjustment as changes from a COVID impacted 2020 continue to roll out and the schedule hits a new normal.
The NFL’s final roster cutdown to 53 players will take place two days after the game against the Falcons and will be one of the more interesting roster moments leading up to the NFL's regular season.
This August will be the first opportunity for Browns fans to see how head coach Kevin Stefanski and defensive coordinator Joe Woods handle playing time as the team prepares for the season opener on September 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Browns will welcome the snaps in game situations for several pieces of defense needing to gel, and several rookies who hope to positively impact the 2021 season. Those lost reps hurt those new faces in Cleveland when the season started, so expect to see a heavy dose of important Browns rookies and second-year players like Greg Newsome II, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Anthony Schwartz, Jacob Phillips, and Grant Delpit to gain valuable experience.
