NEW MILFORD — The Town Council voted unanimously Monday for Republican Sal Rynkiewicz to fill a vacancy left by Republican Councilman Michael Gold.

Gold resigned to complete classes for a graduate degree, according to Mayor Pete Bass. His classes conflicted with the council meeting schedule.

At Monday’s meeting, Bass read a letter from Gold explaining his departure. “In good faith, I am vacating my seat for someone who can devote time and talent to the advancement and further achievements of the town of New Milford. It has truly been an honor to serve the voters of New Milford for the past 31/2 years.”

Although Gold has left the council, Bass said he would remain on the Library Construction Committee, since the meeting times didn’t conflict with his academic schedule.

Councilwoman Katy Francis moved and the council approved Rynkiewicz’s nomination. Town bylaws state that a seat vacated before an elected official’s term is up, but after more than half has been served, must be filled by a member of the same political party.

“It’s an honor to be on the council in New Milford,” Rynkiewicz said Tuesday. “There’s great people on the council right now, so I’m looking forward to working with all of them.”

Rynkiewicz was immediately sworn in, and will serve the remainder of Gold’s term which ends Nov. 30.

“I want to thank you, Sal, for volunteering,” Bass said at the meeting.

Republican Town Committee member Paul Murphy said Rynkiewicz’s background would add diversity to the council. Rynkiewicz is from Poland and came to the U.S. in 1989. He has lived in New Milford for roughly two decades.

“He brings to the council a wealth of knowledge from outside of New Milford and a view through the eyes of persons that have seen life under different governments,” Murphy said at the meeting.

Bass said he thinks Rynkiewicz “brings kind of a new dynamic” to the council.

“I’ve known him being on the [Zoning Board of Appeals] and really liked his different perspective, which I think will be great on the council,” Bass added.

Rynkiewicz spoke during public comment, coming to the microphone to thank town officials for their leadership during the pandemic.

Specifically, he mentioned the Department of Public Works crews, the mayor, and the Town Council for their hard work.

Rynkiewicz said he plans to run for the same Town Council seat in November.
