Lewis Thorpe had spent quite awhile exiled to Rochester. Apparently he doesn’t want to go back there. The Twins lined up some run support for the rookie left-hander’s return to the majors, but he didn’t need most of it. The Twins put up enough runs in the first inning to match the total Thorpe gave up tonight.

Jorge Polanco was the linchpin of the scoring in the first inning. Ehire Adrianza had got onboard with an infield single, and Polanco brought him home with a RBI triple. Eddie Rosario picked up the other RBI of the inning, driving Polanco in on a single.

The Royals got one run back in the third. A leadoff double by Alex Gordon turned into a run after a pair of sac flies. It just seemed to get the Twins offense riled up in the next inning.

Josh Donaldson hit his own leadoff double. He advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a groundball Mitch Garver hit to first. Byron Buxton hit a double too. He didn’t have to work as hard to make it home, as he simply trotted in when Max Kepler hit a two-run home run.

The sixth was another fun inning for Twins fans. Less fun for the Royal’s bullpen, who used three pitchers. Marwin Gonzalez’ one-out walk ended Josh Staumont’s night. Jorge Lopez had it even rougher though. He gave up singles to Byron Buxton and Max Kepler that loaded the bases, and then had to face the red-hot Adrianza. Lopez’ second offering became a two-run double. Richard Lovelady came on to try to end the inning, and eventually did, although not before Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer that made it 10-1 in favor of the visitors.

Kansas City scored their other run in the sixth as well. Whit Merrifield tripled, and then came home on a grounder.

The Twins scoring in the seventh took advantage of wildness from the men on the mound—Gonzalez walked, moved to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Ehire Adrianza finally saw a pitch he liked, and doubled to bring in the man on third.

The final two runs came in the ninth again this afternoon. Buxton hit a single to start the inning. A balk moved him to second, and a groundball to third. He easily scored on a double by Luis Arraez, and then Arraez scored on a single hit by Miguel Sano.

Lewis Thorpe pitched eight innings, Matt Wisler closed out the game.
