On KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday, organizer Kiesha Baldwin told us about how it came to be.
“Last May of 2022, Dawson Pugmire is the fourth son of Nate and Jamie. He, unbeknownst to anyone, had a malformed blood vessel in his brain that, one morning, burst. And they rushed him to the hospital, rushed him to Primary Children’s (hospital) and tried to relieve the pressure on his brain, and it was just too much for him, so he passed away on May 15th,” explained Baldwin.
She said his family is big into basketball, his Dad played at Southern Utah University and other family members have played or are playing. Naturally, Dawson caught the basketball bug too, so this tournament is to honor his legacy and his love for the game and people at a young age.
Beneficiaries have been Primary Children’s Hospital and Mountain Crest Sub for Santa.
“And their basketball team was able to help a family in our community who had lost their father, and then they also donated money to Wellsville City, where Dawson is from, to go towards building a community center in the middle of town to just bring more people together,” Baldwin explained. “So, this year, it’s the same kind of thing, we’ll donate to Primary Children’s, and then whatever other need arises in the community, they want to be able to help.”
Halftime activities are open to everyone from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $5 each and the day will feature appearances from USU basketball players.
The deadline for teams to compete, though, is this Friday, July 28th.
