OAK FOREST, IL — A Rantoul man was charged with multiple felonies Sunday after a standoff with police that led to a chase along 159th Street and Oak Park Avenue.

Police were called to a BP gas station at 5548 W. 159th St. just before 11 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun threatening to harm people. Officers found a man, now identified as Laotis L. Buckley, 48, matching the description standing next to a gray Kia.

Officials said he threatened police, saying, "I'm going to shoot you," before pulling a gun from his waist holster.

Buckley flashed the gun, police said, and Oak Forest officers continued de-escalation attempts, trying to bring the confrontation to a peaceful resolution, police said. After several attempts to get Buckley to relinquish the gun and surrender peacefully, he got into his car and fled west on 159th Street, officials said.

Oak Forest police followed Buckley and stopped him with the assistance of other agencies at 151st Street and Oak Park Avenue. During the felony traffic stop, Oak Forest police continued to negotiate with Buckley. During negotiations, police said he exited his car and removed a large-breed dog from the backseat, then ignored verbal commands to stop as he and the dog approached officers on the scene.

Video shared on social media shows the man with his leashed dog advancing toward officers as they stood with guns drawn.

"Do it, shoot me," Buckley reportedly said as he approached an officer. The officer pushed Buckley back with one hand while continuing to give verbal commands that he continued to ignore. While Buckley was briefly distracted, another Oak Forest officer deployed a Taser to incapacitate him, allowing officers to place him in custody. The dog was not injured and was taken to Oak Forest Animal Control, officials said.

Buckley was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, one count of aggravated assault, and seven counts of resisting a peace officer.

A bond hearing is set for Monday, July 31 in the Bridgeview Courthouse. Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact Oak Forest Police Investigator Engle at 708-687-1376.
